We paddled out to Sand Cay on a Tuesday morning. It’s this tiny sandbar off the coast of Grand Cayman that looks untouched from a distance — crystal-clear water, seabirds circling, the kind of quiet that makes you forget what day it is.
Up close, it’s a different story.
What We Found
Even somewhere this remote, there was debris. Plastic bottles, tangled fishing line, fragments of packaging that had drifted in from who knows where. It’s a strange feeling — standing on one of the most beautiful spots you’ve ever seen, holding a piece of rubbish that doesn’t belong.
Sand Cay is home to terns, gulls, and frigatebirds, especially during nesting season. It’s a place that matters to the ecosystem of Grand Cayman in ways most people never see. And it needs protecting.
Why We Went
At IslandSoul, the ocean isn’t a backdrop. It’s part of who we are. We’re always looking for new ways to blend adventure and care for this island — and Sand Cay felt like the right place to start something new.
We went out to explore whether it could become part of a future IslandSoul experience: a paddle out, a cleanup, a moment of connection with a part of Grand Cayman that most visitors never reach. The kind of experience that stays with you because you gave something back while you were there.
What Comes Next
This was a scouting trip, but it won’t be the last. We’re working on experiences that combine adventure with environmental care — not because it looks good on a website, but because it’s the right thing to do when the island gives you this much.
